Elijah (Ilyas (AS) or Elias) is a prophet of Islam in Israel during 870-850 BC. Quran describes Elijah as a righteous and great prophet of Islam who preached the word of Allah Almighty. He also regarded as a prophet in Christianity and Judaism. Many Muslim scholars believe that Elijah came from the family of Prophet Aaron (Harun (AS)). It is believed that Elijah was awarded prophet hood after the death of great Prophet and King Solomon (Sulayman (AS)), for the people of Israel.
Muslims believe that Elijah was one of the prophets sent for the guidance of people of Israel by Allah Almighty. In Quran, it is specially mentioned about Elijah and his preaching in opposition of false Syrian god Ba’al, pleading with people to the True God. Most scholars believe that Elijah preached to the people of Israel, ruled by Ahab and later his son Ahaziah. He is believed to have been a prophet of the desert like John (Yahya (AS)). Elijah preached with great zeal to Ahab and his wife jezebel, who were responsible for the worship of false idols in the area of Israel. In spite of all this, majority of people refused to listen to Elijah.
Elijah is mentioned in Quran for his powerful preaching. As Allah Almighty says in Quran,
“So also was Elias (Elijah) among those sent (by Us). Behold, he said to his people, ‘Will ye not fear (God)? Will ye call upon Baal and forsake the Best of Creators,- God, your Lord and Cherisher and the Lord and Cherisher of your fathers of old?’” (37:123-126)
The Qur'an makes it clear that the majority of Elijah's people denied the prophet and continued to follow idolatry. However, it mentions that a small number of devoted servants of Allah Almighty among them followed Elijah and believed and worshiped Allah Almighty. As Quran Says,
“But they rejected him, and they will certainly be called up (for punishment),- Except the sincere and devoted Servants of God (among them).” (37:127-128)

ReplyDeleteQuran discusses Elijah or Ilyas (May Allah bless him with peace) in very brief way. As a muslim we believe that All prophets were from our lord and all were on straight path. The majority of people refused to accept the prophet and continued to follow idolatry. During my class of Quran For Kids I teach stories of prophets too. Insha Allah I will tell them the story of Elijah (May Allah bless him with peace) too.

DeleteI am a Muslim and yes I am aware of Yah/Jah as one of the titles by which God commanded the Israelites to address Him. Yes, praise Jah/Yah/Jehova/YHWH.
It is also important to know that Islam and the Qur’an does not teach that there is any 'one' single 'name' for Allaah. Allaah has many attributes of Perfection that are titled to Him but it is not respectful for us to think of God as having a personal name like we use personal names for our children and human identities. Even YHWH/Jehova from which Jah/Yah is derived, it is not actually a name. It is a response to the Israelite's question "what is God's name". So God said I Am that I am, that's my 'name' to the Israelites. It's basically saying I just AM. I don't need a name like you do. What do you mean "what's my name" like you need to distinguish between me and my family member? I AM GOD!!
I AM/YHWH is in the Qur’an as well but it is not seen as an actual name and the phrase "Verily I Am" is there when the story of Moses speaking with God is mentioned.
We refer to God by His names but we shun those who are seeking to commit blasphemy when they mention a name, as Allaah commands us in the Qur’an. Like those who try to say that Jesus is Jehova because his name may contain Jah and means "the glory of Jah" and therefore he's God and so on.
We seek refugee in God from this falsehood and treachery against God. So yes. All attributes of perfection and names, titles etc. belong to God so we can call on Him by those names. But Jehova is the name given to Isrealites, not gentiles and Ishmealites. So this is not a name that all of mankind must see as God's only true name. It's a name that Israelites were given to call God. This is why the name does not appear in the New Testament writings at all except as a translation of 'I Am' in the same way it appears in the Qur’an. It's because they did not see it as a proper name.
Nonetheless it is one of God's titles/names and as Muslims we call upon whichever name we please.

Muslims claim that Allah is the same as God in the bible.. which ar no names but merely titles. That's it. Even Satan the devil is called a god, the god of this system of things. So.. the title god means something. And attributes are not NAMES. It's decriptions of the nature of God. God says clearly in the bible.. JEHOVAH IS MY NAME. The meaning of Elijah in hebrew is... MY GOD IS JEHOVAH.
